Help! How exactly do I get a leave of absence from work?

    I need to take a leave of absence from work. I don’t know how long I will be away. It is due to a family emergency. I don’t know if I will be paid or not, during this time. What should I do?

    To be honest, I am not too sure myself. However, you need to speak with your employer first and explain the situation to him or her.

    This can be tricky. I think for some situations, you may be paid, but for others, you may not. It also depends on the reason and how long you need to be away.

    Other factors may also contribute to this. For example, how long you have been with the company. This is one of those things that can have so many answers, depending on your reasons, length required and even more. But do be prepared that you might not get paid.

    I suggest that you keep your own record of what transpires over this time off. I say this so that you don’t get taken advantage of, or suffer from some kind of administrative error. If your employer has some kind of automated process where these kinds of things are accurately taken care of, let’s say, by some kind of time and attendance software, then you need not worry.

    However, I would still advise that you keep your own records, just to be on the safe side. The place I work at right now uses a system from Synerion which takes care of these things. If your company uses a similar system or software to take care of some time off for an employee, then the process is more accurate. It becomes simple for them and you.

    As for the pay, I really have no idea. If you need 6 months off, it is highly unlikely you will be paid, right? Perhaps 2 or 3 days may be acceptable, but I am not the law! Best to ask your employer, or call a government office to find out.

    I think you may be paid if it is one or two days sick leave. If you need to take a few months off, I am pretty sure you will not be paid, however, you may be able to apply for something else.

    I suggest you call someone and clarify this. It sounds to me like you may be away for quite a while. There may be federal or provincial programs that can provide you with some money temporarily. At least some money is better than nothing, right?

    My guess is you won’t be paid. To take time off, or leave of absence, you obviously have to speak to your boss. I also suggest that you have some kind of written document to hand in to your boss.

    Things like taking time off to attend a family emergency is not something you will be paid for, I’m afraid. Some other factors may also come into play, such as the length of time you’ve been employed in the company. Talk to your boss, but also call some of these government places.
